Red Velvet's Wendy Suffers Serious Injuries After Falling During Rehearsal: Reports - Billboard

Ahead of a planned performance on Christmas Day, Red Velvet’s Wendy reportedly was seriously injured from an accident and is currently hospitalized.

Wendy, who had just released the song “Psycho” with Red Velvet earlier this week, was reportedly rehearsing for her appearance at South Korean broadcaster SBS’s annual Gayo Daejun event when she fell from a platform. According to a statement on Dec. 25 to local media from Red Velvet's company SM Entertainment, she was immediately brought to a hospital and diagnosed with fractures in her pelvis and wrist as well as injuries to her face.

Today (Dec. 26), SM issued a statement updating fans regarding Wendy’s health, and clarified Red Velvet’s upcoming appearances at similar year-end events on other South Korean broadcasters. “With the exception of Wendy, the other four Red Velvet members will only participate individually such as for their planned collaboration stages and MC role at the KBS Song Festival and MBC Music Festival, and Red Velvet will not perform as a group,” said SM according to Soompi. “Wendy is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment. She will focus on treatment until her health is recovered.”

SBS also issued a statement today following a brief one offered up immediately following the incident over the holiday. “We wish to apologize once more regarding 2019 SBS Gayo Daejeon,” the company said. “During the rehearsals for Gayo Daejeon on December 25, an unfortunate accident took place. SBS wishes to once more sincerely apologize to Red Velvet’s Wendy, who was injured, as well as her family, the members of Red Velvet, and fans.”

“As Wendy’s recovery comes before all else, the director of SBS’s entertainment division and the staff have been working closely with her agency SM Entertainment since the accident occurred, and we are doing our best to provide adequate treatment for her injuries.

“Right after the accident took place on December 25, the staff blocked off the area and called for emergency services so that Wendy could be rushed to the hospital and undergo a thorough examination. We have begun an internal investigation into understanding the exact details of the accident, and once we fully understand the cause, we will take greater care to ensure that such an accident does not occur again."

A pre-recorded performance of Red Velvet performing "Psycho" aired during the broadcast of the show, though Wendy was unable to appear in a Disney-oriented set where she was set to sing a solo rendition of "Speechless" from Aladdin and collaborate on a version of "Into the Unknown" from Frozen 2 along prominent female K-pop vocalists.

Following the incident, fans used several hashtags on social media to share their well wishes to the injured star, and questioned the safety of stars at the SBS and other similar events, raising concerns about work conditions for performers, especially during the hectic end-of-year performance season that impacts the South Korean entertainment industry with performances just about every other during the end of December and part of January.
