‘Velvet Chrome’ Nails Are Trending, and Khloé Kardashian Is a Fan - Allure

Some extremely un-fun people on the internet have been known to mom-shame Khloé Kardashian for her manicures — they're faux-concerned that she can't handle her baby girl with such long nails, which, come on — but we've got nothing but praise for the youngest Kardashian sister's digit decorations. And her latest look is so cool that it practically demands the longest surface area possible.

On Wednesday, December 18, Kardashian posted several photos and videos giving followers of her Instagram Stories a closeup look at her latest manicure from Los Angeles nail artist and Kardashian-Jenner favorite, Chaun Legend. (He kept busy in the week leading up to Halloween doing Kardashian's Cruella de Vil nails and Kylie Jenner's Little Mermaid manicure.) From straight on, the coffin-shaped nails look like they're painted a matte burgundy shade; moving in the sun, however, there's an amazing, dimensional, chrome-like glow.

I asked Brooklyn-based nail artist Savannah Walker how the effect was achieved, and she told me it's actually quite simple: A matte topcoat was painted over shimmery polish or chrome nail powder, muting the almost iridescent effect that's normally seen with a glossy finish. And from the look of nail artist posts on Instagram, it appears that the matte/chrome combo is trending — and that many nail pros are calling the look "velvet chrome" because of the luxurious, almost pile-like look.

It looks incredible in a number of colors, shapes, and lengths. Just check out a few of our favorite examples of "velvet chrome" nails on Instagram.

Go to a pro for perfect results, but if you want to give yourself a "velvet chrome" manicure at home, try a couple coats of one of the chrome-effect nail polishes from KBShimmer's License to Chill collection, and top it off with Sally Hansen's Big Matte Top Coat.
